Santa Clara vs Arizona State
(NCAAB) Broncos (SCU) vs. Sun Devils (ASU),
Point Spread: -4.50 | -110.00 Broncos (SCU) (Away)
Result: Loss
On the go-against list at the start of the season is ASU, which might have picked the wrong year to move into the ultra-rugged Big 12. Bobby Hurley is already feeling some pressure and now goes to battle with a practically new team, almost all transfers or frosh. Some of the latter are highly-regarded such as 6-9 Jayden Quintenance, and mid-major Gs BJ Freeman (via Milwaukee; 21.1 ppg last year) and Alston Mason (via Mizzou State; 17.5 ppg a year ago) were productive at their prior stops. But the opener vs. lightly-regarded Idaho State turned into a real slog in Tempe as the Sun Devils trudged to a 55-48 win, hitting barely 36% from the floor and 29% beyond the arc. Meanwhile, SCU is highly-experienced, and took down a much-hyped Saint Louis is the opener at Sioux Falls. Herb Sendek's squad has size and depth and a matchup nightmare in 6-7 wing Adama Alpha Bal, plus boomerang transfer G Carlos Stewart, back from one year at LSU and likely more productive tonight than in the opener when 0 for 8 from the floor (he scored 15.2 ppg for the Broncos two years ago). Don't forget the Broncos beat Stanford, Oregon, and Washington State from what was ASU's old Pac-12 last season, plus a win over Gonzaga, the only of those quartet of wins at home. Play Santa Clara (at Henderson, Nv)
