One of the curious hires of the offseason was Vance Walberg, a onetime Pepperdine coach and longtime HS mentor in the Central Valley and credited as being the father of the "Dribble-Drive Motion offense" which has been adopted by John Calipari and various others. But it didn't work so great for Walberg years ago at Pepperdine and not sure what to make of the Bulldogs' labored 64-57 win in the opener vs. Sac State, when Triton College add Amar Augillard scored almost half of the FSU points (30 of 64)... off of the bench!. It's an almost completely new Bulldog team, as well as the coach, and Mountain West sources are expecting some real growing pains. A trip across the Coast Range to UCSB might not be the best thing right now for Fresno, given that Joe Pasternak is feeling some heat and has apparently taken matters into his own hands, with a no-holds-barred Gaucho destruction of Portland (which took Oregon to OT on Tuesday) on the weekend in a 41-point blowout as the Gauchos' motion offense, among other things, dished out an impressive 23 assists. More experience and continuity on the UCSB side, with holdover G Jason Fontenot II leading the way with 21 points vs. the Pilots and with USD sr,. transfer G Deuce Turner chipping in 15, and looking to be a valued addition for Pasternak.
