UCLA at Washington
(NCAAF) Bruins (UCLA) vs. Huskies (WAS),
Point Spread: 4.50 | -109.00 Bruins (UCLA) (Away)
Result: Loss
Anyone under 50 might not realize how bright this rivalry burned in the 60s and 70s, with plenty of bad blood between UI-Dub HC Jim Owens and a succession of UCLA coaches (especially Tommy Prothro) in a highly-colorful series in the days of the old AAWU and Pac-8, featuring several upsets and blowout scorelines where neither side took any prisoners. Nothing quite as hostile these days, especially Friday night, where the question is if this home-field edge can really be this important to the Huskies, who haven't lost in Husky Stadium this season...or won a game away from the shores of Lake Washington. No doubting the results, but U-Dub too often isn't passing the eye test these days, and HC Jedd Fisch again pulled QB WIll Rogers last Saturday at Penn State (though Rogers apparently keeps the starting job this week). The real storyline here is the revival of the Bruins, who have not only won three straight but covered seven in a row (at least for those who took UCLA before Friday last month in the week of the Minnesota game). DeShaun Foster has kept his team enthused and animated, and the dormant infantry reappeared last week vs. the rugged Iowa defense as TJ Harden banged out 125 YR, and QB Ethan Garbers continues to impress, with 8 TD passes in the win streak. Moreover, the Bruins' swarming defense is wreaking havoc with its aggression and various jail-break blitzes. UCLA, which has won its last two on the Big Ten trail, several time zones away, simply looks better than U-Dub right now as a bowl bid that once seemed a pipedream is now within reach of these resurgent Bruins.
