ASU vs GCU
(NCAAB) Antelopes (GC) vs. Sun Devils (ASU),
Point Spread: 5.50 | -110.00 Sun Devils (ASU) (Home)
Result: Win
Maybe Bobby Hurley has something cooking at ASU? Early indicators suggest the Sun Devils aren't as bad as some were envisioning with almost an entirely new team in Tempe, and a sluggish opening win over Idaho State. But a win over Santa Clara in Henderson and then pushing Gonzaga on Sunday in Spokane suggest Hurley might not be overmatched in ASU's Big 12 debut campaign. There is experience in the backcourt, as transfers BJ Freeman (14 ppg; via Milwaukee) and Alston Mason (13 ppg; via Mizzou State) have excelled in previous stops and are providing good leadership along with holdover G Adam Miller, while 6-9 Ball State transfer Basheer Jihad netted 22 at Gonzaga. Various touted frosh, like 6-9 Jayden Quaintance, are also making increasing contributions. Well-regarded GCU, off a 30-in season for Bryce Drew, has not overly impressed in its 2-0 start, partly because leading returning scorer Tyon Grant-Foster (20.1 ppg LY) has yet to play, but he is scheduled to be activated for tonight. No matter, the ASU effort against the powerhouse Zags suggests they are not going to relinquish control of the Valley of the Sun tonight without a fight at the NBA Suns arena.
