This is a 10* TOP TOTAL on the UNDER Lightning/Capitals.
Both of these teams can score, and both can defend, but I think for a number of different reasons that this will be a defensive affair, rather than a high-scoring shootout.
When these teams played in Tampa in November, the Lightning held on for the 3-2 victory and I expect even less goals scored here, in what I believe will be a very playoff like atmoshpere for this game.
First off, both teams come into this game off back-to-back high-scoring losses. That's uncharacterisitc for each team, as Tampa allows just 2.80 goals per game, while Washington concedes 2.90.
Washington will definitely be out to avenge that first loss to the Lightning, but to do that, it'll have to double down on the defensive end after a 6-1 home loss to Carolina, followed by a 5-1 home loss to the Wild. I say the home side definitely does that here though.
Lightning fans can empathize, as they first lost 5-4 in a shootout to the lowly Canadiesn, before a 6-2 home defeat to the Leafs.
Neither of these playoff bound clubs can be happy the way its performing and performing well at this time of year is crucial. No one wants to back their way into the playoffs obviously.
Each has a difficult upcoming schedule as well, which I think will drive these teams to play even harder on the defensive end tonight.
So that's my read on this one, expect a playoff like atmoshpere and effort from each side and look for this total to stay well UNDER the posted number.
