The Chicago White Sox go on the road to take on Central Division rival, the Cleveland Indians. The Sox showed off their offense in the first two games of the season led by Yoan Moncada. They were let down in game three by their starting pitching and Reynaldo Lopes and Gio Gonzalez got lit up early by the Twins. The Southsiders will send Dylan Cease to the mound for the start. He will need to step it up this season with Michael Kopech opting out of the season due to coronavirus. Last season, he was just 4-7 with a 5.79 ERA and will need to get better if the Sox have a chance to make the expanded playoffs. He has made just one start against Cleveland, allowing four earned runs in 6 ⅔ innings of work, while striking out 11 batters and walking just two in a no-decision.
The Indians won two of three to open the season and would love to put some early distance between them and the White Sox in this shortened season. The Indians will turn to Aaron Civale to start this game against the Sox. Last year was Civale’s first in the majors and he went 3-4 with a decent 2.34 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 10 starts. He faced Chicago twice, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA.
The White Sox offense was above average to start the season and while Cease has shown the ability to miss a lot of bats he has been susceptible to the long ball. In two starts against the White Sox last season, Civale gave up seven runs in 8 ⅓ innings of work. The White Sox bats should be able to put up some runs and look for Cleveland to add some of their own.
