Result: Loss
Iowa is coming into this game with a 1-0 record this season after beating Illinois State 40-0 in their 1st game of the season. Iowa was a very good team in the Big 10 last season as they went to the Big 10 Championship, losing to Michigan 26-0, and it was their great defense that got them that far. They have had one of the better defenses in the nation the last few years, specifically when it comes to scoring. Their defense kept them in games last season since their offense was awful, but their offense has gone through a transformation this season. Their offense was supposed to be much better last season with McNamara at quarterback and it was still awful, but he played very well in that 1st game and it looks like he has settled into the system this season. They were only up against an FCS team, but he was very accurate with his passes as he completed 67.7% with 251 yards and 3 TDs no interceptions. Kalen Johnson also rushed for over 100 yards and the team had 200+ rushing yards total. They are going up against an Iowa State team that is also 1-0 after winning their 1st game of the season against North Dakota 21-3. Rocco Becht played well in that game as he completed 20/26 passes for 267 yards and had 2 TDs with no interceptions, but they did not have much of a run game against a much weaker FCS team. That is going to be a big problem for them in this game as Iowa has a very good defense and will be able to shut down this offense that only scored 21 points at home. Iowa was averaging 1.7 yards per carry in that 1st game so shutting down the Iowa State run game will be easy for them, and that is going to affect Iowa State's ability to throw the ball and move it down field efficiently. Iowa State also gave up 174 yards on the ground and were averaging 4.1 yards per carry against. That is not awful, but it was also against an FCS team, and Iowa was averaging 6 yards per carry in their 1st game so they are going to eat on the ground here while their defense causes turnovers and sets them up with short fields. Iowa is going to cover the spread in this game.
