Result: Loss
Utah is coming into this game with a 2-0 record this season and they were very impressive in their 1st game. They beat Southern Utah 49-0 and then followed up with a 23-12 win against Baylor in their last game. They looked like they were well on their way to becoming the best team in the Big 12 this season in that game against Baylor, Cam Rising balling out with a 17-0 lead by the end of the 1st quarter, but then disaster struck for Rising as he picked up another injury and now it looks like his season might be over again. They only scored 6 points the rest of that game after scoring 17 in the 1st quarter and the offense was never the same without Rising leading it. Utah also has a very good defense that they leaned on a lot last season when Rising was out, and their defense held up against Baylor to get them the win. The offense was not good without Rising last season and they are going to struggle once again with him out in this game. They do have a very good head coach in Whittingham though, and he will set up a good game plan that relies more on running the ball and winning with good defense. They are going up against a Utah State team that is 1-1 this season, but their 1 win came against an FCS team. They are coming off of a 48-0 loss against USC in their last game and their offense has been awful this season. Utah State has been switching between their 2 quarterbacks Bryson Barnes and Spencer Petras, but neither quarterback has been known for their offensive prowess. Both players came from teams with good defenses as Barnes was the quarterback for Utah last season when Rising was out and he struggled to move the ball in a lot of their games with more weapons on the team too. Petras came from Iowa when they had one of the worst offenses in the country but a defense that was carrying the team, even outscoring the offense at times. Utah State is not going to move the ball efficiently with these two quarterbacks, especially against a defense like Utah. Utah has a much better defense than the USC defense they saw last week so they could be looking at getting shut out once again. Utah State has not been good on defense themselves, but Utah is not going to move the ball efficiently on offense with Rising out as they will try to run the ball more and that will milk the clock shortening this game. This is going to be a low scoring and defensive game that stays under the total.
