This is an 8* "MID-CHALK CHOKE-OUT" on the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves are atop the NL East and will look to jump out to a quick start the second half in what I believe is a very favorable pitching matchup for them. Atlanta is actually percentage points behind Washington for the top spot in the division, while Philadelphia is in the cellar and is going to miss the playoffs for a third straight year. The home side sends Ervin Santana (7-6, 4.01 ERA) to the hill; Santana gave up two runs over 6 2/3's innings in a 10-3 win over the Phillies on June 28th. The visitors counter with AJ Burnett (6-8, 3.83 ERA) who has been decent of late, posting a 2.94 ERA during seven-straight quality starts; note though that Burnett has been pretty mediocre throughout his career vs. the braves, 0-3 with a pedestrian 4.56 ERA over his last four starts vs. Atlanta (also note that Burnett is winless in his last ten starts at Turner Field). Philadelphia is already planning for the offseason, most of its big names have said they'd like to stay with the club, but closer Jonahtan Papelbon has said he'd like to be moved (it's also reported that Burnett could be shipped out shortly as well). I'm giving Santana the slight nod on the bump and that's just enough to tip the scales in our favor tonight; lay the price.
