This is an 8* TOTAL BLOCKBUSTER on the UNDER between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Two of three in this series have flown above the posted number including the Phillies 7-6 win yesterday; suffice it to say, I think the finale sets up as a classic pitchers duel and expect this total to sneak below the posted number at the end of the day. The Mets will surely be eager to atone after blowing a five-run lead in yesterday's setback. The visitors send Jonathon Niese (5-8, 3.51 ERA) to the hill; Niese hasn't been at his best since going on the DL in early July and is coming off an outing to forget in which he was shelled for six runs over six frames in a 7-1 loss at Washington on Wednesday. Niese is a veteran, he'll be motivated to stop his sub-par performance slide and faces an opponent in which he's had plenty of success against in the past, posting a very respectable 2.20 ERA in his last five outings in Philadelphia and a 4-2 with a 2.27 mark in his last ten in this series overall. Note that he faces the last place Phillies for the fourth time in 2014, he's gone 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA over the other three meetings. The home side counters with David Buchanan (6-5, 4.39 ERA) who hasn't allowed more than three earned runs over his last seven starts in place of the injured Cliff Lee, going 5-2 with a 3.43 ERA in the process. Most recently Buchanan gave up three runs over 6 1/3's innings in a victory over Houston on Wednesday; note that he gave up three earned runs over 6 2/3's innings in a 4-1 home loss in his only career start vs. New York back on May 29th. I think that the situation, the numbers and the trends all point to a lower-scoring affair; play on the UNDER.
