East Side Showdown Cubs/Nationals
Play: Chicago Cubs
Rating: 8*
The Chicago Cubs were unable to put up much of a fight in last night's 4-1 loss to the Washington Nationals. I like their chances for revenge on Tuesday as they send John Lackey to the mound.
Lackey (7-2, 2.63 ERA) has been phenomenal in his two starts this month, fanning 17 while allowing just eight hits and two walks through 13 2/3 scoreless frames. He's 2-0 with a 3.58 ERA in five starts against the Nationals and Bryce Harper is 0-for-7 with three strikeouts but also two walks against the veteran.
The Nats turn to Gio Gonzalez (3-5, 3.93). The left-hander has lost four consecutive starts behind an 8.33 ERA. Gonzalez is 3-2 with a 3.10 ERA in eight starts against the Cubs but has struggled with Dexter Fowler (8-for-17).
The Cubs swept a four-game series from the Nationals in Chicago in May and they had won six straight meetings before last night's defeat. They're 5-0 in their past five games following a loss and 10-2 in their last 12 road games vs. a left-handed starter. Look for Cubs to bounce back.
