Result: Win
Play: Toronto Blue Jays
Rating: 10*
The Toronto Blue Jays dropped the opener of this home-and-home series against the Phillies 7-0 but bounced back with an emphatic 11-3 win last night. I like the Jays to ride that momentum as the series shifts to Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday.
Marco Estrada (4-2, 2.57 ERA) will take the ball for Toronto and he's been pitching well all year long. The Jays have won each of his last five starts and the 32 year old has been rewarded with a 3-0 record behind a 2.19 ERA. He's allowed five hits or fewer in each of his last nine starts and has a solid 1.00 WHIP on the season. Previous meetings with the Phillies have not gone all that well for Estrada but I think he'll come up with a big performance tonight.
The Phillies turn to Jeremy Hellickson (4-4, 4.34) who has posted a 3.45 ERA in 15 career starts against Toronto, and he has struggled with Jose Bautista who is 11-for-30 with three homers. The Phillies have lost each of Hellickson's last four starts and he was lit up for seven runs on nine hits with three homers in a 9-6 loss at Washington his last time out. Hellickson has surrendered five homers in his past three starts and that could spell some serious trouble against Toronto's powerful bats.
The Blue Jays are 12-5 in Estrada's last 17 starts after scoring five runs or more in their previous game and 8-1 in the last nine meetings in Philadelphia. The Phillies are a pathetic 2-12 in their last 14 vs. a team with a winning record and 6-18 in their last 24 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
