Iowa opened the season with an unimpressive 7-3 win as a 10.5-point favorite at South Dakota State. The Hawkeyes had only 10 first downs and 166 yards of total offense. Iowa starting quarterback Spencer Petras completed only 11 of 25 passes for 109 yards and their points came from a field goal and two safeties.

Iowa State had an easier opener as they routed Southeast Missouri State 42-10 as a 33.5-point favorite.

Iowa is a lot better than what it showed last week, but it did not look good at all and Iowa State has the confidence and momentum.
