Total: 5.00 | -140.00 Over
Result: Loss
The set-up: The 29-16-2 San Jose Sharks are in search of a fifth consecutive victory, as they look to sweep a home-and-home series on Monday with the league-worst Colorado Avalanche. The Av's are 13-39-2 and with just 28 points, are double digits behind all NHL teams other than the Arizona Coyotes, who have only 34 points (no other team has less than 47!).
San Jose: The Sharks edged the Avalanche 3-2 in OT at home Colorado 3-2 in overtime at home Saturday night and climbed within one point (60 points) of first-place Anaheim (26-14-9, 61 points) in the Pacific Division. The Sharks have won four in a row and six of their last eight to get within a point of the Ducks. Defenseman Brent Burns, who entered Sunday tied for fourth in the league in scoring with 47 points, was kept off the score sheet in the overtime win but is one tally shy of reaching the 20-goal plateau for the second straight season and third in his career. San Jose has come to rely on its blue-liners in overtime this season, as they have accounted for four of the team's five goals in the extra session.
Colorado: The Avalanche have won only two of their last 17 contests (2-14-1), with both victories coming in overtime. Colorado is is just 5-16-1 at home in Pepsi Center and has lost 12 of its last 13. The Avalanche will be without goaltender Semyon Varlamov until after the All-Star break due to a groin injury but Calvin Pickard has played well in his absence and rookie Spencer Martin had 27 saves in his NHL debut on Saturday against the Sharks.
The pick: It's virtually impossible to play on Colorado these days, as the Avalanche have scored less than three goals 14 times in the team's current 2-14-1 run. The team's 89 goals (2.02 per) are a league-low (all other teams have scored 100-plus goals) and being home hasn't mattered, as the Avalanche average only 2.05 goals per game on home ice. The Under is a 10* play.
