The set-up: The 15-10 Ohio State Buckeyes visit College Park on Saturday to face the 20-4 Maryland Terrapins. The Buckeyes are only 5-7 in Big Ten play so far, while Maryland is 8-3, although the Terps have lost back-to-back league games!
Ohio State: Thad Matta has has some career since taking over at Ohio State in 2004-05. The team was on probation that first year but it's been nine NCAA berths (two Final 4s) and two NIT berths (won title in 2008) the 11 season since. Now, here in 2016-17, the Buckeyes are facing the prospect of a losing Big Ten season, something Matta has never experienced. The Buckeyes are coming off a 70-64 win on Wednesday against Rutgers at home. Kam Williams had 23 points to lead Ohio State. However, C.J. Jackson started at PG for the second game in a row with JaQuan Lyle dealing with an ankle injury. Marc Loving, a senior forward, missed part of the first half after he suffered a cut above his left eye. "We need to get as close to 100 percent as we possibly can, but it's sort of that time of the year," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "I think even the managers had ice on them after the game, but to look ahead or look behind with this group is not good." Ohio State is led in scoring by junior SF Jae'Sean Tate (14.1 & 6.1), followed by the 6-8 Loving (11.7 & 5.0), PG Lyle (11.4-5.0 APG), 6-10 center Trevor Thompson (10.8 & 9.4) and redshirt junior guard Williams (10.6).
Maryland: The Terps were hanging right with Wisconsin at the top of the Big Ten before losing 73-72 at home to Purdue and then 70-64 at Penn State. The loss to unranked Penn State hurts and the Terrapins have lost back-to-back games for the first time in 2016-17. Guard Melo Trimble reached 1,500 points for his career in the loss to Penn State but overall, while he's had a good season (16.9 PPG), it hasn't been the outstanding one everyone anticipated. Freshman Justin Jackson flirted with a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds against the Nittany Lions and the 6-7 freshman averages 11.4 & 6.3 on the season, joining Trimble and guard Cowan (10.2 & 4.) as Maryland's only three double digit scorers.
The pick: Maryland may be 21-3 at home in conference play since 2014-15 but the Terps have lost two of their last four home contests. Maryland has won the last three meetings with Ohio State (by an average margin of 15 points) and Ohio State hasn't beaten a ranked team since knocking off then No. 4 Kentucky back on Dec. 19, 2015. However, if Ohio State is to keep its its slim NCAA Tournament hopes alive, I win here may be a must. However, we don't need a SU win to cover. Take the points and make Ohio State a 10* play.
