The set-up: The 41-13 San Antonio Spurs fell to 2-2 on their annual "Rodeo Road Trip" in losing 94-90 Sunday in MSG to the seemingly listless Knicks. However, there is no rest for the weary, as the Spurs travel to Bankers Life Fieldhouse Monday night for a game with the 29-25 Indiana Pacers. The Spurs shot a season-low 36.3 percent on Sunday but face a Pacers team which has allowed an even 120.0 PPG during its current losing streak.
San Antonio: "The object is to put the ball in that orange ring," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich told reporters after Sunday's game "That's what we are all trying to do. Play a little D at the other end. But that orange ring, that ball's got to go in there." Popovich was frustrated with good reason, as only Leonard (25.8 & 5.9) played well, scoring 36 points. Leonard's fellow starters shot a collective 8-for-34 from the floor, while San Antonio's backcourt players were a combined 8 of 36, just 22.2 percent!
Indiana: The Pacers' three-game slide is even more frustrating for fans, as it followed a seven-game winning streak. George (22.5-6.1-3.3), PG Teague (15.6 & 8.2 APG) and center Turner (15.5 & 7.2) have been the core of this year's tam but PF Thaddeus Young (11.5 & 6.1) has missed five consecutive games with a wrist injury and the Pacers have missed his ability to guard power forwards with range (can you say LaMarcus Aldridge?).
The pick: The game within the game tonight is All Star small forwards Leonard vs. George. They both rank among the best two-way players in the NBA and will make for an intriguing matchup all game long. Yes, the Pacers are a solid 20-8 at home but the Spurs have lost two in a row only twice this season. Neither team is overly impressive on the offensive end, with the Spurs averaging 106.6 PPG (10th) and the Pacers 105.6 PPG (14th). However, I believe San Antonio controls this game and does so with defense, as the Spurs lead the NBA in defensive rating (allow 98.6 PPG on 44.2% shooting). The Under is a 10* play.
