Money Line: -141.00 Pittsburgh (Away)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The 38-14-8 Pittsburgh Penguins have gone 8-1-3 in their last 12 contests and currently sit five points away from Metropolitan Division-leading Washington (Caps have 89 points to the Pens' 84). Pittsburgh visits Dallas tonight to take on the 24-28-10 Stars, a team which has lost eight of 11 in the month of February, essentially removing itself as a contender for the final wild-card spot in the West.
Pittsburgh: Captain Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are showing their championship form heading into the final day of February, Crosby has an NHL-best 34 goals, just two less than last season's total despite playing in 26 fewer games! Matt Murray owns a 23-7-3 mark, just one victory shy of matching the single-season franchise record by a rookie goaltender. Murray is expected to get the nod on Tuesday, as veteran Marc-Andre Fleury and GM Jim Rutherford continue to play the waiting game on whether the franchise goaltender will remain in Pittsburgh or be dealt at the trade deadline on Wednesday.
Dallas: The Star lost 6-3 at home to the Boston Bruins on Sunday afternoon, dropping their record against the Eastern Conference to 7-11-4. Tuesday's game could be the last in a Dallas uniform for several players, most notably forwards Lauri Korpikoski and Patrick Sharp plus defenseman Johnny Oduya. Wednesday is the trade deadline.Head coach l
Lindy Ruff noted the speculation is not great but, "Veteran guys already know," the coach said. "They've been here, they've been through it all before, and it's usually veteran guys or unrestricted free agents that are involved in it, and they've been there and done that."
The pick:The Stars are 17-10-6 in their building but are only 3-7-0 in their past 10 contests overall. The Penguins are 13-10-5 on the road and 12-4-5 against the Western Conference. As noted above, Pittsburgh comes in playing well and as for Dallas, "not so much!" The Penguins are the NHL's highest scoring team, averaging 3.48 GPG on 34.0 shots on goal per game, which is also tops in the league. Meanwhile, Dallas allows 3.23 GPG to rank 29th (of 30 teams) and Antti Niemi is expected to be in net tonight, making his first start in two weeks. Good luck! Pittsburgh is an 8* play.
