Result: Win
The set-up: The 3-3 Mets are in Philadelphia Monday for the opener of a three-games series with the Phillies, who are also 3-3. Philadelphia dropped a 7-6 decision to Washington in its home opener on Friday but then outscored the Nationals 21-6 in winning on Saturday and Sunday. The Phils look to make it three in a row tonight, against National League East-rival, the New York Mets. The Mets will take to the road for the first time after going 3-3 on their season-opening homestand. New York salvaged the finale of its three-game series against Miami on Sunday as Michael Conforto homered and drove in two runs in his first start of the year while Noah Syndergaard struck out nine over seven strong innings en route to a 5-2 triumph.
The pitching matchup: Jacob deGrom (0-0 & 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets and Jerad Eickhoff (0-1 & 2.70 ERA) for the Phillies. DeGrom showed no ill effects from his elbow surgery in September, as he struck out six and limited Atlanta to two hits over six scoreless innings on Wednesday. However, he settled for a no-decision and has now gone six starts (Mets are 2-4) without a victory since defeating the New York Yankees on Aug. 2. The good news for New York here is, deGrom is 4-0 (2.42 ERA) in seven career starts against the Phillies, with the team going a perfect 7-0 (that includes a one-hit shutout on July 17 at Philadelphia). Eickhoff also pitched well his season debut b pitched but like deGrom, got no support and took the loss last Wednesday at Cincinnati. He allowed only two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings while recording six strikeouts and one walk but the Phillies were shut out, 2-0. Eickhoff has also had no luck against the Mets in his career, posting a 2.66 ERA in seven career starts but owning a 1-4 record (however, the Phils are much better at 3-4 in those starts).
The pick: DeGrom's 2017 debut was promising, as he threw six scoreless innings of two-hit baseball with six strikeouts and a walk against the Braves. Most important, his fastball topped out at 98 mph. "Last year it was all I could do I felt like to get to 93, 94," he told the New York Post after his Wednesday outing, a game the Mets lost 3-1 to the Braves in 12 innings. DeGrom looks like he's back and I'll make the Mets a 10* play.
