Money Line: -173.00 NY Mets (Home)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The Phillies and Mets have split the first two of this three-game series in New York and will play the rubber match tonight. Philadelphia won 6-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday with New York winning 5-4 last night. The Phillies come into this contest 5-9 overall and have lost six of their last eight. Meanwhile, the Mets' win last night ended a four-game slide (New York is now 8-7), but the Mets will be looking to make it five win in six outings versus the Phillies this season.
The pitching matchup: Aaron Nola (1-0 & 3.27 ERA) takes the mound for Philly and Noah Syndergaard (1-0 & 0.95 ERA) for the Mets. Nola had a poor 2016 (6-9 with a 4.78 ERA / team was 8-12 in his starts) but has shown signs of rebounding in the early going of 2017. He's got 13 strikeouts against just two walks in his tow starting assignments, covering in 11 innings. The seventh overall pick of the 2014 draft, Nola settled for a no-decision on Friday despite allowing just one run on six hits and striking out six over five innings at Washington. However, he was roughed up in his lone career meeting with the Mets, allowing six runs on nine hits in four innings of a 9-4 setback back on Sept. 2, 2015. Syndergaard is off to a dominating start in 2107 with 20 strikeouts without walking a single batter in 19 innings over three starts so far. He beat the Phillies twice in 2016, improving to 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in four career starts against them.
The pick: It's been feast or famine for the Mets through 15 games this season. They have been limited to two runs or less six times but have scored five runs or more seven times. Those New York bats should reach Nola without much trouble and more good news comes the Mets' way in that reliever Jeurys Familia is expected to make his season debut Thursday. Familia led the majors with a team-record 51 saves last year but was suspended for the first 15 games following a domestic violence incident with his wife in October. Make the Mets an 8* play.
