(MLB) Milwaukee vs. NY Mets,
Money Line: -178.00 NY Mets (Home)
Result: Loss
Money Line: -178.00 NY Mets (Home)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The Mets have taken the first two of this four-game home series with the Brewers by scores of 4-2 and 5-4 (12 innings). New York has now won three in a row and four of five to reach 23-27 but are still 8 1/2 games back of the Nats in the NL East. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has dropped seven of nine games to fall to 27-25 but with no team playing all that well in the NL Central, the Brewers remain in first place, 1 1/2 games up on both the Cards and Cubs. The teams continue their four-game series on Wednesday night.
The pitching matchup: Júnior Guerra (0-0 & 3.12 ERA) takes the mound for Milwaukee up against New York's Jacob deGrom (4-1 & 3.23 ERA). Guerra returned from an absence of 7 1/2 weeks to make his second start of the season, working 5 2/3 innings and holding Arizona to one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings. He was a revelation for Milwaukee in 2016, going 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 20 starts (team was 14-6 and plus-$1132, the 9th-best mark among starters). Guerra faced the Mets in June last year and earned a no-decision despite pitching 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball 0-1 & 1.35 ERA / team is 0-1). DeGrom had one of his worst starts of the season at Milwaukee back on May 14 with six innings of four-run ball (took a no-decision in that 11-9 loss) but he has rebounded to win his last two starts while permitting just one run over 15 1/3 innings. In fact, deGrom will be looking to to extend his unbeaten string to seven starts (team is 5-1 in his last six, the loss coming vs. Milwaukee) and give New York's bullpen an easy night after it pitched 6 2/3 innings in Tuesday's 12-inning affair. DeGrom is 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA in six starts versus the Brewers (Mets are 4-2).
The pick: New York's starting rotation has produced a 2.37 ERA over the team's 4-1 stretch and deGrom is currently the team's best (healthiest?) starter. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell is hoping that Guerra can pitch as well as he did the last time out as his bullpen is averaging 3.7 innings per game (too much) and the Brewers are averaging a modest 4.00 RPG in losing seven of nine. Make the Mets.
