Point Spread: 1.50 | -102.00 Oakland (Away)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The A's snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night in Cleveland. However, it marked just the team's eighth road win of the 2017 season Oakland is 8-19 on the road and 23-29 overall, already 14 games back of Houston in the AL West (Astros own MLB's best record at 38-16). The A's will wrap up a seven-game road trip Thursday afternoon against the Cleveland Indians, who are 27-24 and in a virtual tie with the 26-23 Twins for first in the AL Central. However, Cleveland has struggled at home so far in 2017, going just 11-14 (Indians were 53-28 at home in 2016, plus-$1230 vs.the moneyline).
The pitching matchup: Jharel Cotton (3-5 & 5.56 ERA) takes the mound for Oakland and Corey Kluber (3-2 & 5.06 ERA) will come off the disabled list Thursday to make his first start since injuring his lower back on May 2. Cotton was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to make the start at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and held New York without a hit for five innings before he wound up being charged with three runs and two hits over 5 2/3 innings. Kluber lasted only three innings against Detroit back on May 2 as he was roughed up for five runs on seven hits before heading to the DL. However, he had won his previous three starts, striking out 27 over 22 1/3 innings, including a season-high 10 versus Houston back on April 27. Kluber has made six career appearances (five starts) against the Athletics, posting a 1-4 record despite pitching to a 2.93 ERA (3.07 ERA in the five starts). .
The pick: The Oakland Athletics have dropped six consecutive series away from home but they have a chance to earn a split of this four-game set early this afternoon. Let's remember, the Indians are sub-.500 at home (11-14) and who knows how effective Kluber will be after a month on the shelf. We know he's got a 6.08 home ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 2017. As for Cotton, he gave a pretty nice effort at Yankee Stadium last Saturday and on the season, has a 3.13 ERA and 1.17 WHIP on the road, compared to his dreadful numbers at home (8.27 ERA & 1.74 WHIP). Take the 1 1/2 runs and make the A's an 8* play.
