Result: Loss
The set-up: The Rangers hit four HRs in Tuesday's 10-4 win over Miami, making it four wins in the team's last five. Texas remains 3 1/2 games out of the second wild card in the American League, its only chance to play October baseball (the Rangers are 18 games back of the Astros in the AL West). Miami is 45-53 on the season and going nowhere as the two teams play the rubber match of this three-game series Wednesday night.
The pitching matchup: Jose Urena (8-4 & 3.78 ERA) will start for teh Marlins and Yu Darvish (6-8 & 3.44 ERA) for the Rangers. Urena improved to 5-0 in 10 appearances (seven starts) on the road after limiting Cincinnati to one run on three hits over a season high-tying six innings last time out (a 5-1 Miami win). He had struggled in his previous two outings, giving up eight runs in eight innings while surrendering four HRs. Urena owns a slightly lower ERA away from home but the huge difference is that his road WHIP is 0.84 WHIP, compared to 1.62 at home! This marks his first career start against Texas. Darvish could be making his final start in a Texas uniform when the Rangers host the Marlins on Wednesday night. With the trade deadline looming and Darvish set to become a free agent after the season, Texas general manager Jon Daniels was making it known that the Japanese standout is available. Darvish struck out 12 over eight innings last time out at Tampa Bay but surrendered three solo HRs and settled for a no-decision to run his win-less drought to seven starts. He is 0-4 in that span (team is 1-6) and win-less since June 12, despite posting a quality start in five of his last six trips to the mound. In his lone start against the Marlins, Darvish tossed his only career shutout and first complete game in 2014.
The pick: Darvish is off a strong start (12 Ks) but one marred by three solo HRs. However, Texas did win 4-3 and note that Darvish's 3.44 ERA is eighth-best among AL starters. Expect a 'showcase" performance by the four-time All Star. Make Texas a 10* play.
