Money Line: -160.00 Toronto (Away)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The Chicago White Sox actually won 3-1 over the Indians on Sunday, just the team's second win in its last 16 games (3-18 in its last 21). Chicago owns the worst record in the AL at 40-62 but continues to remake its roster in hopes of competing in the near future. Since this past off-season, Chicago has moved Chris Sale, Adam Eaton, Jose Quintana, Melky Cabrera, Todd Frazier and David Robertson, deals which have all brought back top prospects (we'll see). As for 49-56 Toronto, the Blue Jays are close enough to wild-card contention (seven games out of the final wild card spot but with plenty of company!) that they are not expected to be big sellers in advance of the Monday's deadline. Games like Sunday, when a seven-run rally in the ninth inning gave them an 11-10 over the LA Angels, keep hope alive!.
The pitching matchup: Chicago will send one of its last remaining veterans to the mound on Monday, when James Shields (2-3, 5.86 ERA) takes the mound against Toronto's Marco Estrada (4-7, 5.43 ERA) Estrada is looking for his first win since May 27 but it would help he could completed more than six innings. However, he's done that just once in his last 10 outings (he's 0-5 and Toronto 3-7 in that stretch). Estrada is seeing Chicago for the first time this season and has faced the White just two times (0-1 with a 3.95 ERA / team is 0-2) in his career. Shields is 0-2 in four starts this month (White Sox are 0-4) and failed to log a quality start in any of those outings while yielding a total of 21 runs (19 earned) over 19 innings (9.00 ERA). The now 35-year-old is 12-6 with a 3.32 ERA in 25 career starts vs. Toronto (teams are 17-8).
The pick: Shields last faced the Blue Jays back on June 18 in a 7-3 loss (he had a no-decision), as Chicago fell to 31-37 after losing that game. However, its roster now looks vastly different with the White Sox have dealt away left-hander Jose Quintana, third baseman Todd Frazier and relievers David Robertson, Dan Jennings, Tommy Kahnle and Anthony Swarzak in July. Shields own one of the most ludicrous monikers in baseball (in all sports?) in "Big Game James." Note that since the start of 2016, the Padres and White Sox are a combined 12-31 in his starts (minus-$1705). Any reason ever to bet "on" Shields? Make Toronto an 8* play.
