(MLB) LA Angels vs. Chi White Sox,
Money Line: -148.00 LA Angels (Away)
Result: Loss
Money Line: -148.00 LA Angels (Away)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The LA Angels have not been eliminated from wild card consideration just yet but the Angels are "on the brink." They open MLB's final week of the regular season clinging to the hope of reaching the postseason but they have their work cut out for them. LA snapped a six-game slide with Sunday's 7-5 win over Houston but a 5-11 stretch leaves them 4 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second and final wild-card spot in the American League. The good news is that the Angels are in Chicago tonight for the opener of a four-game series and the White Sox are in "rebuilding mode" plus are just playing out the string at 63-92 (only the Tigers are worse in the AL at 62-94).
The pitching matchup: Ricky Nolasco (6-14 & 5.06 ERA) takes the mound for LA and James Shields (4-7, 5.40 ERA for the White Sox. Nolasco is having a miserable season, as the Angels are 10-21 in his starts, with his minus-$1015 moneyline mark ranking sixth-worst among all starters. Nolasco's win-less streak reached six starts on Wednesday, as he settled for a no-decision against Cleveland after allowing two runs and five hits over five innings. Nolasco last won back on August 16, with the team going 0-2 (team is 2-4), since. He has struggled against Chicago in his career, going 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA in eight starts (teams are 3-5). Shields is coming off a loss at Houston on Wednesday in which he yielded three runs on six hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. Shields has been limited to 20 starts due to injury in 2017 and has done little of anything since being acquired from San Diego in a 2016 mid-season trade. He is 7-4 with a 3.13 ERA in 15 career starts against the Angels (teams are 11-4).
The set-up: Nolsaco can't be trusted but no one has heard the moniker "Big Game James" in quite awhile when referring to Shields. The Angels may be a long shot to catch the Twins but their schedule gives them at least, an outside shot. After visiting the White Sox (four games), who hold a 1 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers for fourth place in the AL Central, the Angels play host to the AL West's fourth-place team, the 75-81 Seattle Mariners (losers of eight of nine), for three games. First things first. Make the Angels an 8* play.
