The M's thumped the Padres by a score of 9-3 in the opening game of this home and home series. I like Seattle to hit back with another convincing win tonight.
Hisashi Iwakuma will toe the slab for the Mariners, and he's coming off consecutive solid outings. Iwakuma (3-4, 4.33 ERA) allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings in a blowout win over Oakland his last time out. He's been great in day games, going 10-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 25 starts in the afternoon over the last three seasons.
The Padres will hand the ball to Big Game James (Shields), who has pitched better than his record indicates. Shields (2-6, 3.06 ERA) allowed a pair of runs on five hits, striking out six in six innings in a 4-3 loss to the Giants his last time out. He hasn't been getting much in the way of run support, and that could hurt him against a Mariners team that has really hit him hard in the past.
He hasn't fooled Robby Cano, who is batting .411 with five home runs over 90 at bats against him.
