The set-up: The Troy Trojans were just the 6th-seed in the Sun Belt tourney but won four games in five days, capping their run with a 59-53 win over Texas State. That victory earned the Trojans their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2003 and as a No. 15 seed, draw ACC tourney champ Duke, a school which is 107-35 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, marking the best winning percentage in tournament history.
Troy: The 22-14 Trojans have won six straight entering the NCAA Tournament. Wesley Person Jr. (14.8) is joined by two other guards on the perimeter, Holliman (12.1) and PG Baker (8.2 & 3.1 APG). Up front, the 6-6 Varnado (16.5 & 7.1) is helped out by a trio of frontcourt players combining to chip in about 20 points and 14.5 rebounds.Troy led the Sun Belt in made three-pointers with 305. Incredibly, Troy survived against Texas State, despite going just 1-for-17 from 3-point range.
Duke: The Blue Devils were the AP's preseason No. 1 team but endured numerous injuries, along with the one-game suspension and continued scrutiny surrounding star guard Grayson Allen's apparent propensity for tripping opponents. However, Duke had a terrific ACC tourney, becoming the first school to win that tourney with four victories in four days. The last three wins came over then-No. 10 Louisville, then-No. 6 North Carolina and then-No. 22 Notre Dame. Duke has a terrific balance of vets and youngsters. Kennard (20.1 & 5.3) has been the team's most consistent scorer all season, with Allen (14.1) finally settling in as a would-be PG plus senior Jones has lent a steady hand while chipping in 6.8 PPG. The 6-9 Jefferson was lost to an injury last year but has been a steady presence all season up front, averaging 10.9 & 8.2. A pair of 6-10 freshman were deemed superstars prior to the season but Giles was hurt for the first part of the year and comes in averaging 4.3 & 4.0 in 24 games (about 12 minutes per). However Tatum has met and exceeded expectations, averaging 16.9 & 8.2. A third freshman is guard Jackson, averaging 10.7 PPG.
The pick: Duke is a huge favorite here and Troy could be live via the 'backdoor.' However, Duke averages 80.7 PPG (28th) on 47.7% shooting (34th) and won't be slowed down by Troy. As for the Trojans, they love to 'fire away' from three and no way they shoot 1 of 17 like last Sunday. The Over is a 10* play.
