The set-up: The 2016-17 NBA season has been a lost cause for Brooklyn for quite some time now, as the owners of the NBA's worst record (13-55) is the only team in the Eastern Conference officially eliminated from postseason contention. The 29-39 Dallas Mavs had won six of seven from Feb. 25 to Mar. 10 to give the team hopes it could challenge for the West's final playoff spot but Dallas has lost three of four since that surge and currently finds itself 3 1/2 games back of Denver, in 10th-place in the West.
Dallas: The Mavs beat the Nets 105-96 on Mar. 10th for a fourth straight win, but three losses in four games have followed, two of them being of the 'ugly' variety. The Mavs lost 100-78 on Mar. 13th at Toronto and then just this past Friday, lost 116-74 in Philadelphia to the 76ers. Incredibly, Dallas actually led by two points after the first quarter on Friday, before suffering its most lopsided loss of the season. The Mavericks shot 34.5 percent overall (including 21.7 percent from three-point range), while the 76ers shot 52.5%, making 12 of 29 from three. "Tonight, was by far the worst of the year in terms of energy, effort, togetherness and we all own it," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We all own it. There is not a lot to say we got outplayed in every way possible."
Brooklyn: The Nets are playing their best basketball of the season of late with two wins over the crosstown rival New York Knicks and a close 98-95 home loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday. Granted, Friday's loss was the Nets' 18th in their last 19 home games but Brooklyn is 4-8 since the All-Star break, when Jeremy Lin returned from a second strained left hamstring. Lin (14.1 & 5.1 APG) is finally over his hamstring problems and he makes a difference. In fact, Brooklyn is 7-14 (.333) with Lin in the lineup and 6-41 (.128) without him.
The pick: When the Mavs bested the Nets in Dallas back on Mar. 10th, Brooklyn led the Dallas in the fourth quarter of that contest, despite playing without leading-scorer, center Brook Lopez (20.6). Lopez returned from an ankle injury in the Nets' next game and is averaging 24.3 points in the last four contests while going 12-of-24 from three-point range. The last time the Mavs visited Brooklyn was back on Dec. 23, 2015, when the Mavs won 119-118 in OT. Why lay points on the road with a team struggling as much as the Mavs currently are?
