Coach Ron Rivera reiterated practice that he did not want to do anything to put the first pick of the 2011 draft under pressure to re-injure the left ankle that was surgically repaired in March.

So if Newton finds himself under a lot of heat and forced to scramble, his time on the field likely will not last past the first quarter. Rivera hopes Newton resists all temptations to run -- even if pressured. He is skeptical Newton has that much willpower if under a heavy rush. Carolina has a good starting OL, but no depth.
