There have been some startling performances, good and bad, thru the first two nights of the new NHL season. If there is any consensus among league observers, however it's that the Preds are a team to watch after embarking upon perhaps the most aggressive offseason upgrade in the NHL.
Newcomers include past Stanley Cup winners Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos, both likely on the flanks in the Tommy Novak line, plus another Cup winner, defender Luke Schenn, in a serious bit of shopping by Barry Trotz. The NHL's most prolific offense last season for Andrew Brunette hardly appears to have gotten any worse. This could well be a playoff preview because the Stars remain in the Western mix, though some wonder if pending contract situations needing to be addressed with key cogs such as Wyatt Johnston, captain Jamie Benn, and goalie Jake Oettinger might prove distractions in Dallas.
