UC Riverside at Santa Clara
(NCAAB) Highlanders (UCRV) vs. Broncos (SCU),
Point Spread: 8.50 | -110.00 Highlanders (UCRV) (Away)
Result: Loss
They're already spending more time in the pews at the Mission on campus as Santa Clara hoops is looking for some divine intervention, dealing with some real issues at the moment, and waiting for Herb Sendek to uncover some proper combinations. It hasn't helped that three-point shooting has gone completely on the blink for the Broncos, who went 2 for 17 from deep on Saturday in Reno, and now at an odorous 26.2% for the season. A chief culprit has been boomerang transfer G Carlos Stewart, who was counted upon to be a consistent deep threat after scoring 15 pg in his last tour of duty for the Broncos two years ago. instead, he's at an icy 15% (3 for 20), and his contributions so erratic that Sendek benched him on Saturday at Nevada, giving him only 15 minutes of court time. In SCU's defense, the early schedule has been challenging, but so might be no-nonsense UCR, with much of its lineup back in full from last season, led by explosive soph G Barrington Hargress (19.2 ppg; scored 26 in last week's rousing 70-69 road win over Riverside rival Cal Baptist).
