No shame "winning ugly" which seems to be a semi-theme of these Euros. Both England and the Netherlands have been party to that, though a bit more for the former, which has been pedestrian for almost the entirety of the tourney and only has one win in regulation time (vs. Serbia, narrowly, in the opener). Gareth Southgate has continued to lead an incredibly-charmed life in the favorable draws for his England in the knockout stages of these big tourneys, but Southgate's England has never really beaten a big boy (sorry, Germany's version at the last Euros doesn't qualify). We're not quite sure the Dutch qualify, either, as Ronald Koeman's side has been getting plenty of stick at home, too, but their play has been more aggressive and they have also displayed a fightback bent. By now it seems as if Harry Kane is laboring on the England side, and Jude Bellingham has only more sporadic contributions in Germany (though he did keep England alive in the round of 16 vs. Slovakia), with Bukayo Saka and deft penalty-taking needed to survive the Swiss in a quarterfinal shootout. We wonder, too, the fact that England has played a pair of extra times in a row might drain them a bit for the semis, and Southgate's reactive, rather than proactive, substituting could come back to haunt England. The Dutch seem to be growing into the Euros as well, with Liverpool's Cody Gakpo now a strong choice for the Golden Boot. Expect to see more of Romania hero Donyell Malen on Wednesday at Dortmund, and Memphis Depay is well overdue to produce. The robust Dutch backline, led by the majestic Virgil van Dijk, can make life more sticky than it has been for England. But it's the sort of open game that Netherlands employs, something England hasn't faced against a succession of defense-at-all-costs foes, which could tip this one in the favor of the Dutch in Dortmund.
