First round action continues Friday, and the game I'm most excited to bet is this 5/12 matchup. Colorado State is actually favored in this spot despite being the lower seed, and I think that's a mistake.
Yes, Memphis is probably going to be without guard Tyrese Hunter, and they've had some inconsistency at times this season. However, at their best, the Tigers can beat anybody. This is a team that boasts wins over Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss, and UConn, among others, and guard PJ Haggerty is a genuine problem for opposing teams. They've won eight in a row ahead of this one, and while the AAC wasn't an outstanding league, it's not like this team skated to its record with wins over weak teams in non-conference play.
Colorado State, meanwhile, comes out of the Mountain West...and should we be trusting anything from that conference? Last year's league was a major disappointment come tournament time, and I don't think this year's version is better. That hypothesis looks even better considering San Diego State's no-show against UNC in Dayton earlier this week. The Rams do have ability, and Nique Clifford is a very good player, but what about them says they should be favored in this spot?
I think this spread is completely backwards, even with Hunter's injury. Memphis hits me as a likely winner, and I'll take them getting points in this matchup every single time.
